Escalator outages persisted at the Foggy Bottom Metro station today, forming a line to enter the station that snaked around the neighboring hospital during this afternoon’s rush hour. The station has been experiencing escalator outages for the past few weeks, caused by intermittent repairs, unexpected outages and even a passenger’s shoelace getting caught.

Two of the station’s escalators are currently under repairs scheduled to continue into September and the third unexpectedly stopped working earlier today. For the second time in three weeks, all three escalators were out of service with only one to serve as a stairway for the station’s commuters, causing the backup.

Foggy Bottom is not the only station with escalator problems, Metro’s web site shows that 38 stations are currently experiencing outages.

Kaine, who was attending a ROTC ceremony for his son Nat, is on the short list of candidates for the highly-anticipated announcement. Other possibilities include Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware and Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana.

An official announcement is expected from the Obama campaign as early as this afternoon after the presumptive Democratic nominee confirmed yesterday that he has finally decided who his running mate will be.

Kaine was the first statewide elected official outside Illinois to endorse Obama for president. Nat, the eldest of the three Kaine children, has also campaigned for the senator.

The Kaine family also appeared on campus earlier this summer for Colonial Inauguration events.

Men’s basketball recruit Dwayne Smith will not be on the Colonials’ roster this season, Director of Athletics Jack Kvancz told Hatchet Sports Editor Andrew Alberg today.

Kvancz alluded to Smith being ruled ineligible by the NCAA, as was first reported by the Saint Paul Pioneer Press last week. In that article, Smith’s AAU coach Ro Russell said Smith was ruled ineligible because he took two core classes in his fifth year of high school. NCAA rules stipulate that fifth-year high schools seniors may take only one core class in order to retain their eligibility.

Kvancz said he did not know the details of the situation, but said he thinks the men’s basketball team is trying to recruit another player for this season.

Smith signed a National Letter of Intent with the Colonials in April.

Hiltz, who admits she is unique from the typical pageant participant, believes it was her strong opinion in the interview portion that set her back in the competition.

“I think what killed me was that in the interview portion they asked me why I wasn’t here for an acting or modeling opportunity,” explained Hiltz. “I simply responded (that) the entertainment business is cutthroat and you always need an education to fall back on…I was just being honest!”

Despite not winning, the blond beauty queen cherished her first national pageant experience.

“I got to swim with dolphins and meet some pretty cool girls,” she said. “So I did walk away with a smile and a great experience.”
