I agree with the University on this one. I’ve been to Commencement on the Ellipse, and they are right. It is a mess with construction. If it rains, it’s worse. The best part about the Mall is that the view will be the same. The ceremonies were set up so that the guests were facing (appropriately) the Washington Monument. That’s still possible from the Mall. In addition, from the Ellipse the White House is largely hidden from view by trees while on the Mall, photos with graduating friends can use the US Capitol Building as the perfect backdrop.
