Inside The Hatchet

Bring ‘em on…

I haven’t read many comments on our blog in a while, especially concerning overall Hatchet coverage. So ask me some.

Any thoughts on:

  • the election of Jake Sherman to the position of editor in chief
  • thoughts on our famous and infamous April Fools’ issue quickly approaching
  • our travel and coverage of the basketball teams’ NCAA bids
  • focus on the SA elections and the incoming student-leaders

I’ll respond to comments in the comment section.

Ya know Ceasar, WRGW also has a new General Manager… an entire day of programming devoted to April Fools… been to all regular and postseason games for both teams… and broadcasted live from the SA elections

In case anyone was wondering, heh

  2. CURIOUS OBSERVER says:

No blog comments lately? Perhaps it is because all three blogs: Hatchet; SA; and Sports are all intertwined on the Hatchet Blog. While being simultaneously broadcast on the other two individually. This has been pointed out many times within the past year, to no avail.

No use bringing up anything controversial on the Hatchet Blog, because those comments are just immediately pushed out of the way by new postings on the other two blogs, which are just repeats. :(

  3. Opposing Ferrets says:

For years, the April Fools edition has provoked controversy – but few laughs. In fact, I largely question the propriety of a supposedly serious newspaper spending an entire issue devoted to comedy…often bad comedy.

But this year, I have to admit…the Hatchet April Fools edition is actually….well, I’ll say it, funny.

The articles are well written, fully developed, and a dead-on accurate reflection of life at GW. From 0×40 to a new dorm at GW Hospital to the op-ed pieces, almost every article for this issue effectively makes its point.

Should I ever have occasion to pee on a townhouse on my way back from McFaddens, I will remember this April Fools’ edition fondly.

    Kudos.

Sorry for the dealy in responding, I had been out of town for a few days and then neglected to look at the comments.

As for April Fools’, I’m glad that opposing ferrets thought this was a better year. I, too, thought many of the pieces were satirical and humorous and, at the same, time controversial. We try to strike a balance between comedy and raciness, and it’s not always easy to find that happy medium.

One problem is that our paper’s demographics are not very homogeneous. We have sexually-explicit 18-21-year-olds who expect some of the base humor we put in, but also have faculty members with Ph.D.’s, and administrators with children, and Foggy Bottom community members, and alumni, etc., all who are reading our issues online and in print. So it’s hard to make any particular story funny or relatable to every group. But we try.

As for curious observer’s comment about the way content has been posted lately, I agree. It’s not very smart. Since I’m no longer web editor, I don’t have direct control over this, but I’m going to bring it up to be changed. The Hatchet Blog should be a forum for discussion about our whole paper’s general content and editorial decisionmaking.

The tagline below the blog’s header says “a glimpse into the inner workings of one of the best college newspapers in the nation,” and that’s what it’s supposed to be. If we stop posting repetitive content on the main blog, then maybe we’ll get more comments.

    Thanks for your thoughts.
