On today’s men’s basketball headline

There were some concerns about running “Men’s basketball sinks Navy in BB&T Classic” as a headline for today’s men’s basketball story. It’s an easy pun to make, one The Hatchet has made before and other publications also made about yesterday’s game, but given the heavy wordplay of the story’s first paragraph, the prevailing sentiment was that we should use it.

What was unfortunately not considered, however, was the timing of publication. Today marks the 68th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor that prompted U.S. involvement in World War II. It is an incredibly unfortunate coincidence, but it is just that. We did not, under any circumstances, intend to make light of the event or any other attacks on our nation’s naval forces.

That the event slipped our mind altogether may not really be all that much better, but either way we regret the headline and would like to apologize if we have offended any of our readers. The wording has been changed on our online front page, though it will obviously remain in the print editions distributed this morning.

I love how The Hatchet is willing to step up and change their headline but not GwSports.com.
