Nour AlRashed. Alexa Jaenicke | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Nour AlRashed
Year: 2013
Major: International business
Hometown: Kuwait
Outfit: Top, Forever 21; vest, JouJou; shades, Ray-Ban; leggings, American Apparel; flats, Urban Outfitters; bangles, Kate Spade

When we spotted Nour’s ensemble outside Starbucks, it was love at first sight. Dressed in all black save for a pop of blue, she exudes understated cool while softening her look with a swath of color. Apart from her play on tones, this fashionista is a master at mixing textures and fabrics, as her nylon leggings and leather vest combo proves. The pairing  adds a hot and edgy aura to the effortless on-the-go look. Finishing her outfit with a classic Michael Kors watch, some girly Kate Spade bangles, and a pair of versatile Ray-Ban sunglasses, Nour crafts the perfect girly-rocker ensemble.

Lauren Kohn. Alexa Jaenicke | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Lauren Kohn
Year: 2015
Major: English
Hometown: Los Angeles
Outfit: Shoes, Converse; shorts, belt, Urban Outfitters; bangles, Israel street vendors; top, Forever 21

Just because fall has arrived doesn’t mean the weather is always in accordance. We know that you’re eager to dive into your cozy knit sweaters, but it’s nice to show off some legs while the weather is still surprisingly sunny and warm. Channeling a laid-back vintage vibe, this California-native was turning heads in Kogan, where we found her soaking in some sun on this particularly summery fall afternoon. This fashion-foward sophomore perfectly accessorizes her tie-dye denim cut-offs with a skinny cheetah-print, balancing two busy prints with a basic black top. She also rocks her “favorite dirty converse high-tops” with a pair of fun striped socks, and finishes her look with a mob of bangles, reinforcing Coco Chanel’s mantra that “the more accessories you have, the better you look.”

Mandy Leiter. Alexa Jaenicke | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Mandy Leiter
Year: 2015
Major: Undecided
Hometown: Los Angeles
Outfit: Shirt, shoes, Gap; pants, Caitlin Boutique; watch, Tissot

We spotted Mandy as she made her way to class, effortlessly styling some of fall’s biggest trends. We couldn’t help but drool over her floral-print jeans, in a fall-appropriate grey tone, which she perfectly pairs off with neutral brown flats and a basic red top to balance the statement-piece bottoms. Mandy smartly tops off her look with an over-sized menswear watch, adding a touch of femininity with a few bangles and bracelets. Finally, this Los Angeles native solidifies her ensemble with a studded necklace.  The daring print and the bold accessories gives a girly twist to this fall must-have look.

Shelby Siegel. Carly Lisnow | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Shelby Siegel
Hometown: New Orleans
Year: Second-year graduate student
Major: School counseling
Outfit: Jacket, Banana Republic; top, Zara; pants, Lucky; shoes, Cole Haan; bag, Dooney & Bourke

We found Shelby in the entrance of Gelman Library. Relishing in the new season, she captures the rich shades of autumn with her stylish looks. She brightens the neutral tones of her jacket, bag and shoes with her mustard-yellow pants and striped top, creating an enlivening color contrast. Splashes of gold on her bag’s hardware and the buttons of her jacket tie together the colorful pants and the rest of the outfit. Anticipating a class presentation later in the day, the fashionable grad student aimed to look cute and comfortable. This outfit accomplishes that and more, making her appear polished and confident.

Madeline Clements. Carly Lisnow | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Madeline Clements
Hometown: Paris
Year: 2015
Major: Undecided
Outfit: Sweater, Ella Moss; pants, Rag & Bone; boots, Prada

We spotted Madeline’s clean, monochromatic outfit as she crossed 23rd Street. The shades of gray that comprise her look become progressively darker from her shoulders to her boots, drawing attention up to her face. Her color-blocked top features an engagement geometric pattern and her shiny boots are a sophisticated take on the ubiquitous lace-up boot trend. On a day when many students donned neutral shades befitting the weather, Madeline stood out in the crowd. Her style brings Paris to Washington, translating to a comfortable, chic outfit for a gray day.

Summer Guo. Carly Lisnow | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Summer Guo
Hometown:
China
Year:
First-year graduate student
Major:
Hospitality management
Outfit:
Jacket, Forever 21; jeans, Levi’s; shoes, Aldo; bag, Nordstrom

Summer’s cheerful look lightened up a gloomy day on H Street outside Gelman Library. Her personal style tends to favor mood-enhancing bright colors, exemplified by her yellow double-breasted jacket. Summer revives the trend of rolled-up, casual jeans, which reveal adorable bow-trimmed flats. The two colors of the flats correspond to those of the bag, lending cohesion to the outfit. No matter what the weather brings, Summer will be spreading sunshine all over campus with her simple yet jaunty ensemble.

Gabbi Angeloni. Carly Lisnow | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Gabbi Angeloni
Year: Senior
Major: History
Hometown: San Antonio
Clothes: shoes, Jack Rogers; jeans, Madewell; sweater, Lilly Pulitzer

Gabbi adds some warmth to a chilly fall day with her playful, brightly-printed, patterned Pulitzer top. Her dark jeans act as a balance to her colorful top, while her muted bag ensures the ensemble isn’t too loud or overpowered by color. Gabbi says her biggest style influences are ease and accessibility, but that doesn’t mean she has to sacrifice elegance: this eye-catching look captures both of Gabbi’s fashion requirements and proves forward thinking.

Miranda Houchins. Carly Lisnow | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Miranda Houchins
Year: Freshman
Major: Undecided
Hometown: Mount Pocono, Pa.
Clothes: dress, Band of Gypsies; belt, Charlotte Russe; shoes, H&M; glasses, Forever 21

Miranda takes a playful designer piece, like her polka-dotted dress, and mixes it with stylish, yet affordable accessories. The Pennsylvania native is influenced by classic and vintage styles, but fuses these inspirations and contemporizes with her modern shoes and glasses. Her belt, adorned with a lace trim, fits right in with the lace fascination of the season. Letting her loose locks down, Miranda keeps the dressy look casual and comfortable.

Jamie Fisher-Hertz. Carly Lisnow | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Jamie Fisher-Hertz
Year: Junior
Major: International Affairs
Hometown: Amherst, Mass.
Clothes: bag, Steve Madden; ring, Aldo; shoes, Nine West; shirts, necklace, Urban Outfitters

Jamie takes a cue from the bright, sunny weather with this ensemble. The junior flaunts the color blocking trend with her two vibrant, contrasting tops. Bringing in the lace trend yet again, Jamie claims that she loves layering, so incorporating multiple bright colors into her daily look is a cinch. The cuffed capri pants are a versatile addition to any wardrobe, and Jamie’s shoes add a touch of comfort and practicality to the fashion-forward outfit.

Molly Bock. Carly Lisnow | Hatchet Photographer

This post was written by Hatchet reporter Julie Alderman.

Name: Molly Bock
Hometown: Phoenix, Ariz.
Year: 2016
Major: Business
Outfit: vest, Urban Outfitters; shirt, Nordstrom; shorts, Forever 21; sunglasses, Ray Ban; shoes, Birkenstock; bracelet, Spain

Bringing a modern twist to a fashion throwback, Molly balances the delicate and intricate nature of her vest with the harsher simplicity of her top and shoes. The incoming freshman complements the top half of her look with a pair of jean shorts – a must-have for any trendsetter. The Phoenix native says she likes to bring an international flare to her outfits with her super exotic jewelry. Pairing rounded aviator sunglasses with Birkenstocks, Molly makes a ’60s-esque style look modern and up-to-date, and pulls together individual garments to create a seamless outfit.

Name: Alexandria Taliaferro

Alexandria Taliaferro. Carly Lisnow | Hatchet Photographer

Hometown: Bronx, N.Y.
Year: 2016
Major: Theater, philosophy
Outfit: shoes, thrift store; skirt, Walmart; top, Forever 21; bag, vintage

For many, the graphic tee might be enough to make any outfit, but not for our next fashionista Alexandria. Sprucing up a classic graphic tee with a high-waisted skirt brings a classy touch to what may otherwise be a simpler outfit. The men’s style shoe is a perfect way to add some contrast to the feminine look. The combination of the blue skirt – a versatile and flirty fashion staple – and Alexandria’s slicked back hair make her look chic and ready to hit the books. Alexandria says she draws her influence from star Zoe Saldana, but maybe Zoe should be calling Alexandria for some tips.

Name: Cara Fortuna
Hometown: Atlanta, Ga.
Year: 2016
Major: Theater

Cara Fortuna. Carly Lisnow | Hatchet Photographer

Outfits: shorts, American Apparel; shoes, DSW; top, Hard Rock Hotel; bag, Lucky

Cara’s outfit is the perfect fusion of trendy and casual. Cara claims that her number one objective is comfort when putting together an outfit, but the freshman proves that even the coziest outfit can be achieved without sacrificing style. Her white tennis shoes are perfect for pounding the pavement, and paired with classic high-wasited jean shorts, they create a retro vibe to the overall laid back style. The combination of the graphic tee and the shorts show how it’s easy to spice up any vacation shirt. The practical bag brings an extra air of style to the edgy but easy look.

The spring semester is coming to a close, and it’s been a fashion-filled few months. As we prepare for summer, we can take a cue from these trendsetters:

Zohra Roy. Bryan Hoechner | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Zohra Roy
Hometown: Queens, N.Y.
Year: 2015
Major: Environmental studies and women’s studies
Outfit: Jeans, shoes, H&M; shirt, Forever 21; bag, vintage

We found freshman Zohra Roy enjoying the beautiful weather in a pair of straight-leg jeans. The mint color fit in perfectly with this season’s pastel color palate and the jeans’ high waist made them the focus of the outfit. Roy kept her outfit simple and fresh by wearing a white T-shirt. The chain detailing on her metallic cross-body bag added some New York edge to the springy look. On the band of her jeans, Roy pinned a Campaign GW “Go Green” button to show her support for on-campus Earth Day festivities.

Sam Seker. Bryan Hoechner | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Sam Seker
Hometown: Somerset, N.J.
Year: 2013
Major: Event management
Outfit: Shorts, H&M; bag, Aldo; shoes, Marshalls; necklace, HauteLook

Keeping with the popular fashion trend, junior Sam Seker sported a high-waisted silhouette with a pair of tan shorts. The pleat details and fastened bow made for a dynamic pair of shorts, which Seker complemented with a simple tank top. Her neutral-toned sandals were perfect for the sunny weather. Keeping with the warm, natural colors of the rest of her look, Seker accessorized with a sparkling patterned cross-body bag from Aldo. She topped off her outfit with a gold necklace, adorned with a pendant that read, “Laugh as much as you breathe.”

Stefanie Faro. Bryan Hoechner | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Stefanie Faro
Hometown: Boston
Year: 2015
Major: Undecided
Outfit: Jeans, Blank; shoes, Tory Burch; shirt, Patterson J. Kincaid; sunglasses, Carrera; watch, ToyWatch

Brightening up the corner of F and 20thstreets, freshman Stefanie Faro wears a pair of richly colored cobalt blue jeans. Her T-shirt contained traces of the same tone of blue within the tie-dye pattern along the neckline. To keep from competing with the colors in the rest of look, Faro opted for black Tory Burch sandals and black and white sunglasses. She spiced up her looked with a simple white watch from ToyWatch.

Genevieve Lipinsky de Orlov. Avra Bossov | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Genevieve Lipinsky de Orlov
Year: 2015
Major: Art history
From: New York
Inspired by: Mary-Kate Olsen
Outfit: Jacket, sunglasses, H&M; shirt, Brooks Brothers; boots, Vintage Shoe Company; jeans, American Eagle

We found freshman Genevieve Lipinsky de Orlov enjoying the sunny weather in Kogan Plaza wearing a classic denim jacket from H&M, worn over a button down shirt from Brooks Brothers. To prevent a denim overload, she wore a light grey pair of jeans. Though she keeps her tones simple, the color combination makes for a well-balanced outfit. We absolutely loved the boots she bought from Vintage Shoe Company, whose footwear is all hand-sewn. Mary-Kate Olsen is one of her main style inspirations, which explains the fabulously oversized round-rimmed sunglasses.

Alexis Coleman. Avra Bossov | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Alexis Coleman
Year: 2015
Major: International affairs and communications
From: Texas
Inspired by: Various fashion blogs
Outfit: Pants, Forever 21; shoes, Macy’s; jacket, Express; shirt, unknown

Taking denim to the next level, Alexis Coleman donned a pair of trendy floral-printed jeans from Forever 21. Her gold open-toed flats were perfect for the warm weather and for showing off a pedicure. Considering how busy the print on her jeans was, Coleman kept things simple with a grey shirt and an earth-toned leather jacket. Her knit hat offered a final touch of texture to the outfit.

Katherine Wynne. Avra Bossov | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Katherine Wynne
Year: 2014
Major: International affairs
From: Canada
Inspired by: ’50s style
Outfit: Shirt, skirt, bag, vintage; shoes, Paris

Sophomore Katherine Wynne’s outfit is classy, stylish and reminiscent of 1950s fashion. We loved her mint-colored skirt, which boasts a high waist and subtle pleats to add volume. Wynne’s white button-down blouse coordinated with her shoes, which she purchased in Paris. The feminine lace-up flats had cutouts at the front, with small silver studs adorning the shoes’ white leather. Wynne’s outfit is mostly vintage, as she is well practiced in consignment and thrift shopping.

Name: Sandra Loyola
Year: 2015
Major: Political science
Hometown: Oakland, Calif.
Inspired by: Bay Area style
Outfit: Boots, BCBG; sweater, dress, belt, Forever 21

What’s one of the best ways to rock a sundress? Add some rougher details. With this look, freshman Sandra Loyola uses worn brown leather accessories to add a rugged edge to the soft, springtime feel of her dress and sweater. Her BCBG boots are also gilded with faded gold buckle details that give the shoes more texture.

Monique McKenny. Avra Bossov | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Monique McKenny
Year: 2015
Major: Psychology
Hometown: Philadelphia
Inspired by: Beyoncé, Kerry Washington
Outfit: Blazer, H&M; dress, shoes, necklace, unknown

Floral patterns are a staple for spring wardrobes this season, as freshman Monique McKenny demonstrates with her classic floral dress. She styles it up with a grey blazer from H&M, made of a lighter material, making it ideal for a casual yet sophisticated look. Her cozy moccasins reinforce the casual tone of her look, perfect for strolling across campus. She adds a touch of edge to her outfit with a metallic necklace.

Juliana Salazar. Avra Bossov | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Juliana Salazar
Year: 2013
Major: French and business administration
Hometown: Miami
Inspired by: Leandra Medine
Outfit: Jeans, Current/Elliott; shoes, Gucci; sweater, Vince; watch, Michael Kors; shirt, Zara

Junior Juliana Salazar’s casual chic look is achieved through perfect layering. She tops off her neutral shirt with a knit Vince sweater. Her scarf adds an extra layer and her burnt orange straight-leg jeans add a pop of color. Salazar’s Gucci flats are simple and complement the outfit flawlessly, and straight-leg pants or skinny jeans pair particularly well with flats. Her Michael Kors watch and rings from Intermix provide a clean shimmer to the outfit and help keep her look fresh.

Spring break has passed and D.C. greeted returning students with some beautifully warm weather, making the transition back to school a little bit easier. Here are some examples of the back-from-break style seen on campus:

Sarah Willis. Delaney Walsh | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Sarah Willis
Year: 2014
Major: English
Hometown: Cambridge, Mass.
Inspired by: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Nicole Richie
Outfit: Dress, Ark & Co.; jacket, 7 For All Mankind; glasses, Warby Parker; bracelet, Hayden-Harnett; shoes and belt, vintage

Sarah Willis describes her style as “conservative cute with an edge.” Her color blocking dress felt fresh with its pleated skirt and burnt orange and ivory hues. To reinforce the silhouette, Willis added a vintage black belt that coordinated well with her black boots, keeping the look casual. For additional edge, she wore a sharp black jacket. Her glasses were from Warby Parker, a company that donates a pair of glasses to a child in need for every pair purchased.

Sam Bauer. Delaney Walsh | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Sam Bauer
Year: 2014
Major: Geology
Hometown: Folsom, Calif.
Inspired by: Older sister
Outfit: Cardigan, J.Crew; shirt, Lacoste; pants, J.Crew; shoes, Michael Kors; belt, vintage; bag, Hobo International

Sam Bauer paired J.Crew pencil pants with matching Michael Kors loafers for a casual yet professional look. To keep things light for spring, she wore an off-white sequined cardigan, also from J.Crew. Her blue clutch from Hobo International added a pop of color to the neutral tones of the rest of her look that was just perfect for spring.

Name: Emily Ruderman
Year: 2015
Major: Business
Hometown: Staten Island, N.Y.
Outfit: Dress, Forever 21; bag, Rebecca Minkoff; watch, Michael Kors; shoes, Steve Madden; sunglasses, Ray-Ban

Emily Ruderman. Delaney Walsh | Hatchet Photographer

Freshman Emily Ruderman embraced the nice weather in a striped maxi dress from Forever 21. The black stripes worked well with her black Rebecca Minkoff bag, which gave her look an edge with gold studs. Her nude flats were perfect as their simplicity didn’t compete with the bold stripes on the dress. Emily added some color with a few coral and aqua bracelets.

My, haven’t we been spoiled this winter! The weather has been far from harsh, and it’s clear from GW students’ outfits that spring is in the back of everyone’s mind. We started to see a slight shift from winter blacks and grays to more natural, warmer colors this week. Here are a few examples:

Zoelle Dizon. Shannon Brown | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Zoelle Dizon
Year: 2014
Major: Biology
From: New Jersey
Clothing: Coat, Forever 21; boots, Aldo; bag, Michael Kors; jeans, Express

In spirit of the blue skies, sophomore Zoelle Dizon chose an oatmeal-colored wool coat from Forever 21 to lighten up her look. The brown leather of her boots complements the coat’s buttons and pulls the look together effortlessly. We loved how Zoelle kept winter’s edge in mind with her selection of a Michaels Kors bag in black leather.

Hyun Sun Lee. Shannon Brown | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Hyun Sun Lee
Year: 2014
Major: Political Science
From: Korea
Clothing: Shoes, Japan; jacket, Korea; bag, Chanel; wallet, Louis Vuitton

Sophomore Hyun Sun Lee, who goes by the name Sunny, looked effortlessly chic in pointed-toe nude heels on her Starbucks run. While many of the items she was wearing were purchased outside the U.S., we absolutely loved the light blue textured jacket Sunny bought back home in Korea. Her black, quilted leather Chanel bag provided the same edge as Dizon’s Michael Kors bag, while the red leather of her Louis Vuitton wallet added a fun pop to the predominately neutral-toned look. A similar pop of color can be worked into an outfit with a bold scarf, necklace or a vibrant lipstick.

It’s still winter, right? That might be the case, but we were lucky enough to enjoy some beautiful and mild weather this past week. Here are a few ways GW’s fashion-conscious took advantage of the blue skies and warmer temperatures.

Katherine Wynne. Michael Boosalis | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Katherine Wynne
Year: 2014
Major: International Affairs
Hometown: Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Inspiration: Vintage, 1950s style
Clothes: Shoes, Ferragamo; shirt, vintage; Jewelry, vintage

We found sophomore Katherine Wynne studying at Starbucks when her shoes caught our eye. Considering how beautiful the weather was, she traded in warm boots for a pair of chic Ferragamo flats that combined a metallic gold buckle with black patent leather. Her black vintage shirt was longer in the back, providing a varying hem length. This and the sheer fabric at the shoulders gave the shirt a relaxed, carefree feel. Wynne dressed up her outfit with some vintage jewelry pieces she received as gifts from her family, including a wonderfully classy string of pearls.

Kristina Morzan. Michael Boosalis | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Kristina Morzan
Year: 2015
Major: International Affairs
Hometown: Queens, N.Y.
Inspiration: Model-off-duty style
Clothes: Shoes, pants, sunglasses, Forever 21; scarf, Canal Street; jacket, Kohl’s; top, H&M

Choosing a leather jacket instead of a heavier option, Kristina Morzan embraced the warm day in casual, model-off-duty fashion. A pair of brightly colored earrings or a colorful scarf can look especially great against the darker tones of a leather jacket. Morzan’s shoes from Forever 21 pop out in the spring-like weather with their off-white floral crochet detail.

Catherine Carney. Michael Boosalis | Hatchet Photographer

Name: Catherine Carney
Year: 2015
Major: Undecided
Hometown: Andover, Mass.
Inspiration: City style, her peers
Clothes: Dress, Forever 21; jacket, Black Rivet; boots, Report

Dresses in January? This week’s unseasonable weather makes that question not so ridiculous. Catherine Carney kept the winter season in mind by choosing a knit sweater dress rather than, for example, a sundress. The thick fabric was detailed with matching buttons, and Carney chose a leather jacket as a lighter outerwear option for the warm weather.

Weather reports say more warm weather may be headed our way. How will you dress for the occasion?
