Senior Jessica Adair was selected by the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury in the third round of today’s WNBA Draft.
Adair was the 34th overall selection and is now the fifth GW women’s basketball player to be taken in the league’s draft, with the most recent being former teammate Kim Beck’s selection by the Seattle Storm in 2008. Beck was taken two slots later than Adair at 36th overall.
The Mercury won the WNBA championship in 2007, but defended that title last summer by going just 16-18. Frontcourt depth is listed as a “need” for Phoenix on the WNBA Draft site, meaning Adair’s arrival may help shore up a weak spot on the team if she ends up cracking their roster. The Mercury used their two other draft picks on Florida guard Sha Brooks and Auburn’s DeWanna Bonner, who torched the Colonials for 30 points and 16 rebounds this season. Here and here are a couple pictures of the two new teammates going up against one another.
For those in the District hoping to catch the D.C. native in action as a pro, the Mercury’s first trip to play the Washington Mystics comes June 25.
