Former University of Michigan head coach Brian Ellerbe will be named an assistant on the GW men’s basketball staff, Director of Athletics Jack Kvancz said today.
Beginning in July, the Maryland native will replace long-time assistant Darrell Brooks, who first arrived in Foggy Bottom with Hobbs in 2001. Brooks has reportedly been hired to take a head coaching position at his alma mater, Bowie State.
Ellerbe coached the Wolverines from 1997 to 2001, accumulating a 62-60 record, and has not held a collegiate coaching position since. He guided Michigan to the Big Ten championship and the second round of the NCAA tournament in his first season at the helm, though the program slipped in subsequent years. The Wolverines finished 10-18 in his final year of coaching the team.
His contract was bought out in 2001 and many of his victories during his tenure were later forfeited by the university as a result of self-imposed sanctions stemming from illegal activity on behalf of program booster Ed Martin. Ellerbe was not said to be involved in the scandal, which began before he arrived in the program.
He also coached Loyola (Md.) from 1993 to 1997 and spent his playing days at Rutgers.

I remember him throwing a fit as a Rutgers player when they lost to GW at Smith Center. He has a helluva temper.
