Men’s basketball senior forward David Pellom will be out four to five months, an athletics department release said today, after undergoing surgery on his left wrist yesterday. The specific reason for the surgery was not released.
The time off halts Pellom from joining his teammates in preseason play in Italy, where the Colonials will compete in a five-game international tour. It also threatens to remove a key component of GW’s roster through some of its non-conference competition, should Pellom’s absence extend the full five months into November.
It’s the second surgery of the offseason for Pellom, who also underwent successful meniscus surgery on his left knee in March, after playing through injury in the 2011-12 season.
“I am disappointed in the timing of this injury at the start of my senior campaign, but getting it addressed surgically will allow me to return as soon as possible,” Pellom said in a statement. “I was looking forward to taking the court with my teammates in Italy next month, but now I’ll just look forward to returning to action that much more in the fall.”
Pellom became an integral part of the Colonials’ lineup last season, where he found his stride offensively to set the new single-season shooting record at GW, with a .685 field goal percentage on the season. Pellom averaged career-best numbers of 10.4 points and a team-leading 6.1 rebounds in 27 games played.
But he also established himself as a key to the team’s energy on the court, often working to become the motivating force for his teammates.
“Being without David for several months this summer is a setback, but it will give some of our returning players and freshman an opportunity to step-up and play additional minutes on our tour through Italy,” head coach Mike Lonergan said in a statement. ”David has vowed to do everything in his power under the guidance of our sports medicine team to return to action this coming season even better than ever.”
