Sangster out

Sophomore Robert Ryan Sangster said Thursday night he will no longer be seeking the Student Association Presidency.

Sangster, who was originally running on the GW United team, said he will no longer pursue the SA’s top post because of “academic reasons.” Sangster said Thursday night that he wanted to focus on his academic studies in the coming weeks instead of running a campaign for SA President.

Sangster told the Hatchet in late January that he would be running for SA President with Executive Vice Presidential candidate junior Josh Lasky.

Sophomore Elliot Rozenberg will be running for the SA Presidency, Sangster said, but it is unclear if Rozenberg will be affiliated with the GW United team. Lasky is still running on the GW United team, along with numerous SA Senate and Marvin Center Governing Board candidates.

Sangster, a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Greek-letter organization and a member of last year’s Colonial Cabinet, had been planning on running for the SA’s top post since December, he said last month.

Rozenberg, also in Pi Kappa Alpha, was a member of the Colonial Cabinet with Sangster and is a spirit organizer for the GW Women’s Basketball team.

Sangster is the second student to drop out of the SA Presidential race of the original seven students who said in January they would be seeking the office. Junior Caitlin Bevin Doherty also announced she would no longer be seeking the SA’s top post last month.

For candidates to have their name appear on the ballot, they must have turned in their signature sheets by 6 p.m. Thursday. Candidates need to garner the signatures of 1 percent of their constituents to be recognized by the Joint Election Committee, the election’s oversight body.

Stay tuned to the SA Blog this weekend for complete information of which students are running in this month’s election, set to take place on March 29 and 30.

I like Sangster. And I like to post on Brandon’s Blog.

  2. I LOVE THE SA says:

GWUNITED is such a fantastic slate. You have SA experience along with new faces – people who know the laws enough to USE THEM to change the SA, instead of ELIMINATE THEM and get nothing accomplished. That’s why I wonder… why would such a seasoned and dynamic team allow Elliot at the helm? He’s a great guy with a lot of friends – but popularity does not a president make. At least I hope not.

There are other candidates with more experience, knowledge, and more solidified ideas – and those who cared enough to declare their candidacy more than a week in advance of candidate registration. Did GWUNITED have a voice in whether or not Rozenberg became their leader?

  3. Justin Neidig says:

I LOVE THE SA maybe you could use your real name next time…I mean that is if you really love the SA.

Anyway, who cares about the other candidates with more experience? What have they done? Each candiate who had experience has been there for at least a year. What have they accomplished? It’s time for the student politicians to get out of the SA and get a job on Capitol Hill – let legitimate students lead the student body.

    trouble in pike-paradise…

  5. Ridiculous says:

A brother is defending a brother, where’s the trouble in paradise yoshi? All I see is brotherhood at its best

  6. yoshisaya says:

cain and ebel were bound by brother, but look what happened with them. i’m not saying pike is cain and ebel, but i’m not saying they aren’t.

  7. Curious... says:

Just out of curiosity, is this another qualified candidate running for one of the most important offices at the school, or is it PIKE desperatly trying to spread their wings farther across campus? Seems odd to me that one PIKE switched out for another only hours before the deadline. And if they were, why didnt Addison, who had already expressed interest in the position run?

  8. Samantha says:

PIKE or not, look at the facts: Elliot Rozenberg has been involved in the GW community since the day he got here and has exhibited leadership academically, socially, and in every aspect of our community. We have Elliot with these credentials, two candidates with Exec Branch SA experience, one who has been a senator, and two others who are also involved at GW. Every single candidate is QUALIFIED to run. The students just need to decide for themselves who will do the best job representing us.

  9. yoshisaya says:

ask elliot rozenberg and pike why addison didn’t run. better yet ask sangster himself.

  10. Election Watcher says:

Maybe we could all talk about the qualifications of ALL candidates and their vision for the Student Association rather than tearing candidates down.

Students complain that the SA is composed of only politicians..maybe its because legitimate student leaders don’t run because all they get is attacked in forums such as this.

If you want the SA to be better…than be a better voter. Research each candidate’s bio, experience, and vision.

And why is everyone being anti-greek? Casey Pond is in Phi Psi, Morgan Corr in Sigma Chi, Nick D’Addario in Sig Ep, Nate Hayward in Pi Delta Psi. Are all of those organizations trying to “extend their reach” too? Did other members of those organizations consider running?

  11. non-greek says:

Well, considering the fact that Casey Pond is being, more or less, forced to run by people like Jon Och and that Pike has simply substituted one brother for another…yea, i’d say this is more about having someone who is sa prez in the frat. morgan corr was always gonna run, this sigma chi thing is recent…so i doubt his fraternity had anything to do with his reasons for running.

also…i would say that people like elliot rozenberg and other administration lackeys are hardly qualified to work as STUDENT representatives. people who essentially become student members of the administration and spend an entire summer of their lives sucking up to administrators are probably more suitable being appointed to secret hearing boards.

  12. Voice of Reason says:

Look at the facts, most people do not join a frat second semester of their jnuior year. Morgan probbably feels involvement with this organization will better serve his chances of being pres.

Morgan faces some stiff competition this year unlike his nearly uncontested attempt to be EVP last year. The best thing for this University and the SA is to have someone unconnected with a frat and not one of these GW career politicians as SA pres. If ever one of these people exist.

As for Elliot Rozenberg, his involvement after someone else drops out only shows that he really doesn’t want the posistion and I question his full committment to the posistion.

  13. Election Watcher says:

Wow non-greek alot of hatred towards the greek community and students who work for the university.

I guess all CF’s, students who are work-study employees in University offices, and just generally students who can sometimes see that the administration isnt totally anti-student shouldnt run for elected office. I mean they are ALL(lets not generalize though) lackeys of the administration who have no opinions of their own.

And lets not be so dismissive of Mr. Corr. Remember when he promised student representation on the board of trustees? I guess that wasn’t a high priority once he was receiving free tickets to University events such as President’s Night, DC Chamber of Commerce Gala, and the reception for Chief Justice Roberts. I guess its true..the University scratches his back(with free tickets to events) and Mr. Corr scratches the administration’s(by not actually accomplishing anything for students).

  14. wow... says:

non-greek, way to enter a conversation and act like you know whats going on without following anything all year. Casey Pond has been one of the most involved people in the SA all year, where exactly do you get the assumption that John even wants him to run?
however, its probably useless to respond to your post seeing that anyone who reads the second paragraph of your post can obviously tell you know nothing about anything…

  15. Ridiculous says:

Voice of Reason- those are some powerful statements you made against Elliot Rozenberg. If you question his committment, why not talk to him directly? You will see the passion and dedication in his eyes. Elliot has served the student body in the past with the SSAC and will continue to do so as president. Maybe you should talk to Elliot before hurling such heinous charges.

  16. Voice of Reason says:

I do not question his service to this school only that if he truly wanted the job why didn’t he declare earlier, why did he do so after Sangster dropped out?

As to my powerful statement’s nothing compres to Ridiculous’s “You will see the passion and dedication in his eyes.”

Once again, I do not question his service or his dedication only pointing out that from a reasonable stand point that if someone joins a race after someone else drops out, it appears sketchy.

I have never met Elliot Rozenberg, but he seems like a good guy.

  17. Nelson Mandela says:

Look, let’s be honest, and call it what it is. PIKE pretty much sucks at life, and I’d rather vote for Lamar than vote for Rozeberg, which when you think about, is pretty pathetic.

  18. Im Confused... says:

Nelson, you posted a comment under the GW Basketball blog saying nothing but “VOTE FOR LAMAR!!!,” and yet now you are dissing him? are you pro or anti Lamar? And what exactly is the point of your comments?

  19. Standing for Truth says:

On February 8 the Office of the EVP transferred $1,000 to the International Affairs Society.

On March 7 the International Affairs Society endorsed EVP Morgan Corr for SA President.

    Connection anyone?
