Metro to expand wireless service

Metro riders that use a cell phone service provider besides Verizon will be able to make calls from inside the Metrorail system, now that the organization has signed a contract to dramatically enhance service in the tunnels.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority announced Friday that Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel, AT&T and T-Mobile will all be allowed to develop a cell phone network inside Metro. The network will also be built to offer wireless Internet as well, according to a WMATA news release.

Twenty of the most-used Metro stations will have service by the end of this year, and the entire system will be equipped by 2012, the release adds.
