PB combines Spring Fling and Fountain Day

Program Board announced Sunday that Spring Fling and Fountain Day will be combined this year to create “Fountain Fling,” an all-day event to take place on the Mount Vernon campus.

PB said the event was moved to the Mount Vernon campus after they learned that “the Smith Center would not be available as a rain site for Spring Fling due to scheduled construction projects on the building,” according to a press release.

The event will feature a concert complete with a headlining band, which PB said has yet to be determined. PB said they will work together with the Mount Vernon Programming Council to put on the event.

“Fountain Fling is a simple and spectacular way for both organizations to work together logistically, combine resources, overcome challenges, and create a great new event for GW students,” said PB Parties Co-Chair Liz Kramer in a press release.

MVPC Coordinator Maureen Logan said she feels the event will be better because the two organizations are working together to plan it.

“As students of GW, members of PB and PC are determined and resourceful. Fountain Fling will be amazing. Period,” Logan said. “This experience has really bonded our two organizations together. Working with PB has certainly been a highlight of my senior year.”

The event will take place on April 25.

Are you KIDDING me? First a complete disastrous Fall Fest, and now the students have to go to Mt Vernon for Spring Fling? The reasoning behind the move doesn’t make sense…isn’t Spring Fling on U Yard? The timing behind announcing this move sounds like it is no coincidence either…sounds like Meehan knew what how terrible students would react to this news, and not vote for this failure.

Well too late, she’s been reelected

  3. Calm Down! says:

First off…take a chill pill. If you read the above article you noticed it said the Smith Center could not be used as a rain site, which means if Spring Fling went on in U-Yard, we would be screwed if it rained. (Last year it rained and in recent years it has rained on this day) Moving it to the Mount Vernon campus ensures a place that is outside AND inside (the gym I believe is a backup site for Fountain day last year). So relax. Mt. Vernon is 3 miles away and we have a fleet of Vern Shuttles, its not like we have to walk up dangerous dirt roads to get there. You don’t want to go to this event, then don’t and stop complaining.

I don’t even know if I’ll be going this year, but I predict this will be a big success since Fountain Day and Spring Fling are usually very popular events and though I’ve never lived on the Mt. Vernon Campus I think it will be a good balance in utilizing both campuses.

That makes sense to me…I mean if there is no Smith Center, there’s no rain site. I don’t understand what “Anonymous” and “A Senator” don’t get about that…

  5. Don't Tread on Me says:

wouldn’t it make more sense to just have it at university yard and rain site at mount vernon?

  6. Former Vern Resident says:

As a former resident of Mount Vernon Campus, I am saddened by the stance that this article and much of the university has taken towards the Vern. PB cites the reason for the event change as being that the Smith Center was unavailable. Yet the Vern is not and should not be considered a “last resort.” Not only do many people choose to live on the Vern, but even those who do not often find themselves enjoying life there. Personally, I cannot imagine a better freshman year than that which I experienced on the Vern, and I know that Fountain Day has been an event cherished and enjoyed by students who live on both campuses.

In short, everyone should stop treating a trip to the Vern as a chore and recognize that Fountain Day has been a highly successful complement to Spring Fling rather than an alternative event. For those of us sick of getting apologizes and looks of sympathy when stating that we live on the Vern, successful integration into the GW community relies not on pity, but on the recognition that Mount Vernon Campus is a vital part of the university.

    Former Vern Resident:

Your naivete is confusing; people hate the vern with good reason. its hard to get to, and really isn’t a part of foggy bottom. I cant believe PB killed spring fling, now its going to be impossible to see the show

  8. Seriously? says:

    In Touch with life:

Are you saying taking a 10 minute shuttle ride is “hard to get to”? You’ve got to be kidding. It takes at least 10 minutes to walk from one side of campus to the other, so I think getting on a shuttle for a short ride to one of the nicest areas in DC is an easy decision, just do it! Saying it’s going to be impossible to see the show is just ridiculous and incorrect. PB did what they had to do, let’s get over it and hope they put on a really good show.

  9. Get Real says:

Listen, no one cares about PB and PC bonding, that’s a load of crap. Spring Fling is supposed to be an event on Foggy Bottom. So what, the Smith Center will be closed…find another rain site. If the rain site has to be on the vern, then fine, but why move the whole event there rain or shine? Anyway, Fountain Day inside that TINY gym is HORRIBLE. You are going to fit a combination of both events in there?? You people who live on the vern are way to protective of it…it’s a nice campus and all, but simply put, students don’t want to be bothered going over there. There’s nothing like Spring Fling on U Yard…it’s just awesome. Students this year really got screwed with good free shows. And to think the Smith Center won’t be done anytime soon, so what’s in store for the Fall? Another Failure Fest. Too bad students vote for these candidates without knowing anything about them.

  10. Suck it up says:

Come on guys, are u serious right now? I know that many of us don’t enjoy going to the Vern for one reason or another, but there really are no other options as far as having it on Foggy Bottom. I would just advise them to have a great, relatively well-known act that will make people want to go to the Vern for the day. I believe in Tiffany and the rest of PB, hopefully they can turn this negative into a positive.

  11. Samm says:

Why would you live there if you go to school in a city- DC? Go to UMD!

  12. Suck this says:

This is absurd! there were plenty of rain sites. PB could have rented DAR Hall or looked at plenty of places on Foggy Bottom. This is going to look worse than fountain day last year, where no one came because of the vern

  13. You Have No Idea says:

Do you know how much it costs to rent DAR! You’re complaining about going to the Vern, yet you’re willing to go to DAR? I’m sorry but this makes no sense to me. Maybe you guys should join PB if you think you can do better…

  14. Jalous says:

Some of these comments are so ridiculous.

    “find another rain site.”

Where do you suggest? Lisner isn’t big enough, and renting DAR would cost tens of thousands of dollars. The Vern is the only option. If you have a problem with that, take it up with the school administration.

  15. ex gw/vern student says:

Seriously guys? Then you wonder why everyone thinks gdub kids are spoiled brats. Yes the shuttle is annoying, but the vern really isn’t THAT far away and the campus there is beautiful. I would never want to live there again, but visiting for a concert is nothing to whine about. And as a transfer student let me just point out how lucky you are gdub gives you such an amazing day, for FREE! Most city schools don’t do this. So be glad they decided to combine events instead of charging for tickets, if nothing else you can use the money you saved to go to some other concert of your choice.

  16. Foxfields says:

    Go to Foxfields instead.

  17. Uvy says:

Nobody wonders or denies that GW kids are spoiled. We pay $55k+ per year to go here.
