Exiled Honduran president to speak at Elliott School Wednesday

The coup-removed President of Honduras, Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales, will speak about his efforts to restore peace and order in Honduras in the Elliott School on Wednesday morning.

Zelaya was forced into exile on June 28 by soldiers who forced him onto a plane to Costa Rica. The Honduran Congress supported the move the same day and voted the former president of congress, Roberto Micheletti, to replace him.

Zelaya has traveled around Central America and the United States since his exile, speaking about the coup d’etat and his efforts to reclaim his title.

The event will be held in the City View room of the Elliott School from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Attendees must RSVP to the Latin American and Hemispheric Studies Program and the Center for Economic and Policy Research at lasp@gwu.edu.

Aaron Wodin-Schwartz, program assistant for the Latin American and Hemispheric Studies Program, said the event is open to the public, but any students who RSVP at this time will be put on a waitlist. If there is room on the day of the event, Wodin-Schwartz said, waitlisted persons will be allowed in.

I cannot believe that you are heralding this clown as a poster child for democracy! Why don’t you mention anything in this article about him being wanted on 19 criminal charges, including treason! Do not portray him as a martyr for democracy, this man is a criminal and peace has been restored in Honduras as of June 28. Long live democracy!

  2. Hugo Chavez says:

This really smacks of poor reporting.

  3. Daniela from Honduras says:

There was no coup! Art. 239 clearly states that anyone who even proposes extending presidential term limits will automatically cease in his/her functions. There was a consitutional succession due to his continuous violation of the law (even after several warnings to stop, trying to become a dictator after “winning an election” (look on YouTube for Zelaya admitting he won through fraud and corruption http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1kHCbLYJN4 ). The other 2 branches of government (remember those?) defended our democracy, our freedom, our sovereignty (you’ve seen evidence of how Chavez meddles in our country’s decisions). Call him what our constitution calls him, a traitor. “Efforts to restore peace and order”? Haven’t you heard him call for insurrection? His followers have since burned down buildings, attacked the VP of Congress, covered houses with graffitti, looted businesses, burned buses and cars, etc. His former cabinet members are asking foe Honduras to be punished by every country. Those who will suffer are the poor, but they don’t care.

Please ask the right questions!!! Ask him why he hadn´t presented the budget to Congress as required by law, why he insisted on a referendum that was declared illegal by all honduran institutions including the Supreme Court, why he spent untold millions on promoting the referendum that he himself has said was non-binding, why he has spent millions on horses, suits, travel, motorcycles, etc.. while claiming he is a man of the people.
Take this opportunity to finally shed some light on the truth and reveal this man for what he really is: a lying sociopath criminal.
Viva la democracia en Honduras, vivan las fuerzas armadas, el congreso nacional y la corte suprema!!

  5. AAMM says:

YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOUR IGNORANCE. AS A SCHOOL YOU HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF BRINGING IN PEOPLE THAT DO GOOD FOR THE WORLD NOT WHAT THIS COMMON CRIMINAL HAS DONE FOR HIS TWISTED VERSION OF DEMOCRACY. HAVE YOU PEOPLE EVEN BOTHERED TO DO SOME RESEARCH ABOUT THIS GUY! HE IS NOT A CELEBRITY…IF ANYTHING HE SHOULD BE INTERVIEWED FROM JAIL…. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THIS … THIS ACTION SAYS A LOT ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL…NOTHING POSITIVE I MIGHT ADD

  6. Ana Hasbun says:

Unbelievable that a character of the magnitude of this stupid so called President could ever get an interview or the attention of well educated people. Somebody who did not even go to school, and all he knows is how to follow Chavez’s orders. Come on get serious!!!! Zelaya was forced out of this peaceful country because of all the acts of drug trafficking, violence, and he is being charged by the Supreme Court Justice for being wanted for many different charges; that is the reason he was put in exile. If right now he would still be in power nobody would be standing up for the rights of the Hondurans. Please don’t show this as a sign of democracy to all that believe in the righteousness of the Constitution may it be yours or OURS the Honduran Constitution. We expected more of a the most democratic country in the world or so the Hondurans thought. Thank you for also betraying US.

  7. Mia says:

As a Honduran citizen who is respectful of the ideals of freedom and democracy I am deeply offended by the portrayal of Manuel Zelaya as a victim of a coup.
The man is a common criminal; he is no more than an egocentric thug who was too seduced by the power of the presidency to give it up.
This is a man who knowingly violated the Honduran Constitution. This is a man who looked down on the judicial and legislative branches of the Honduran government. This is a man who broke in and entered the premises of the Honduran Air Force to steal the Venezuelan ballots that he imported ILLEGALLY to win his illegal referendum by fraud.
This man is the utmost example of human greed and blatant ignorance. This is a man who is lobbying for the disgrace of his own people… those people who he says he stands for. I spit on this man!!! I spit on his fraudulent ways. I am ashamed and pained beyond belief that this towering punk is not rotting in a jail cell by now. JAIL… that’s where he belongs!!! Make no mistake… this is NOT a democrat!!! This is an AUTOCRAT!!!
I sincerely hope that he will expose himself for what he is— a thieving corrupt TRAITOR who betrayed the people who entrusted him with the administration of Honduras. TO HELL WITH MEL!!!

  8. Juan Cacicedo says:

I wonder what George Washington would say that a school carrying his name is hosting a corrupt dictatorial want to be man loyal to Castro and Chavez. It is really hard for me to believe you guys are doing this … unless you are of Leftist Socialistic and Communistic Tendencies. None of what George Washington stood for !!! Shame on you people. I hope that you ask the right questions of why he witheld the budget so there would be no elections in November in Honduras. Please ask him why he had to import ballots from VENEZUELA instead of the Tribunial Electoral College in Honduras. You know why ? BECAUSE HE WAS BREAKING THE LAW !!!! GOD SAVE THE FREE REPUBLIC OF HONDURAS AND THOSE THAT STAND WITH HER !!! PLEASE USA OPEN YOUR EYES BEFORE YOU TOO FALL THE SAME WAY VENEZUELA HAS !!!

  9. Usula says:

By the way ask him why he let Hugo Chavez call Hondurans that support the United States ( PITIYANKEES ) YANKEEPEASANT …. Ask Zelaya why a couple of Months ago he referred to the US as the evil empire … ask why he canceled the US Ambassadors Meeting and recognition of Papers and made him wait and laughed at the US !!! Ask him why he paraded Hugo Chavez, Daniel Ortega, and possibly some Iranian Operatives through the US HONDURAN air base Palmerola !!! This is the guy you are wanting to hear speak ??? GOD SAVE YOU AND GIVE YOU WISDOM !!!!

  10. Alberto C. Downing says:

Two simple words describe your actions… DISGUSTING! and PATHETIC!!! Thank GOD I went to Georgetown once, and not GW!!! I pity your ignorance!

  11. Rita Whitefield says:

DON’T FORGET TO ASK ZELAYA ABOUT THE MILLIONS HE STOLE FROM THE CENTRAL BANK IN HONDURAS,CENTRAL BANK HAS VIDEOS OF THE MONEY BEING CARRIED AWAY AS CASH IN SACKS!!!!

  12. daniel oconnor says:

If Zelaya really was deposed in his pajamas, how was he able to run up over $80,000 on the presidential credit card in the 4 days follwing his removal. Shame on you for being buying into his circus act of Chavez inspired political propoganda. Educate yourselves and give civil society in Honduras the same opportunity you gave Zelaya

INCREDIBLE. ALL THE LIES HE SAID. TWO HOURS OF VALUABLE TIME WASTED FOR YOUR STUDENTS. IT IS A SHAME YOU BRING THIS MAN TO SPEAK.

  14. NSM says:

It was probably the first time Mel Zelaya ever stepped on a university!! Did your students ask him why he is being charged on 18 accounts in his country??

NOW WILL YOU INVITE ROBERTO MICHELETTI? HE IS THE CURRENT PRESIDENT…be fair and hear both sides of the stories…

Stop glorifying this man (Mel Zelaya)…thats exactly what he wants!! He is a Chavez puppet whom never in his wildest dreams imagined he would get so much attention!!
