Classes canceled for fourth straight day, Univ. will remain closed Thursday

Classes have been canceled for the fourth straight day, University President Steven Knapp announced at an organized GW-Georgetown snowball fight Wednesday around 6:30p.m.

Knapp told the more than 200 GW students who turned out for the crosstown collegiate battle that classes were canceled in honor of GW’s victory. The snowball fight, which took place between the two universities at 26 and O streets, was organized by senior Kyle Boyer and publicized chiefly through Twitter and Facebook.

An estimated 225 Colonials showed up to the event and within 30 minutes, the group of around 75 Hoyas retreated, according to reports.

The federal government and other D.C. universities will also remain closed. To make up for the snow days, however, Georgetown announced they will hold classes on Monday, despite the President’s Day holiday. GW officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment about whether GW is considering this option.

This week’s round of snow officially made this winter the snowiest on record and Wednesday brought especially poor conditions, with bitterly cold temperatures and driving winds whipping snow around campus.

The city, burdened with cleaning up a second snowstorm before snow removal procedures for this weekend’s snowstorm were finished, said they are working around the clock to plow roads and re-open public transportation services.

A spokesperson for the District Department of Transportation said at 7 p.m. that snowplows were currently deployed in the Foggy Bottom area.

The plows are driving through the neighborhood as part of a general run across the city and not focusing specifically on the campus. The city will plow Foggy Bottom’s main streets at least once at this time, DDOT spokesperson John Lisle said.
