The University official who oversees Colonial Inauguration will step down Friday to take a similar post at the University of Maryland.
Two-time alumnus Steve Roche will lead the University of Maryland, College Park’s new student orientation program. After serving as a presidential administrative fellow for GW, Roche was hired full-time in 2008.
“In this position, I will be overseeing their orientation office and student coordinators, select, train and supervise their orientation student staff and work with numerous campus partners to welcome new students and parents to campus,” Roche said.
“I’m excited to embark on this next step in my professional career but will always raise high the buff and blue,” he added.
Associate Provost and Dean of Students Peter Konwerski said Roche “will be missed by the students and all the colleagues he has worked with.”
“The positive impact he has had on CI will be felt for years to come,” Konwerski said. “While we are saddened by Steve’s departure, we are excited for him as he embarks on the next chapter in his professional career and are happy that he will be staying in the D.C. area.”
Bridgette Behling, the director of administration and Hallmark Programs, will take charge of the Colonial Cabinet and other programs to make sure the fifth CI is a success this fall, Konwerski said.
“Fall CI will be implemented this year as planned,” he said. “As we look toward the future evolution of CI and the continued excellence of this program, we will begin the process to review and post this position shortly and hope to have it filled during the fall semester.”

The Hatchet incorrectly reported that the University is taking steps to ensure the fourth Colonial Inauguration would be a success this fall, despite the departure of Steve Roche. In fact, the fifth CI will take place this fall. It also originally said Steve Roche worked in the Student Activities Center. That office no longer exists, and he worked for Hallmark Programs.
