Aswani picks cabinet members for SA executive

Posted by Emily Cahn

Student Association President-elect Vishal Aswani selected his choices for next year’s executive cabinet.

Thirty-nine students will serve on Aswani’s cabinet – a number the president-elect said he is excited about.

“My transition staff and I could not be happier with the number of applications received this year, as it far exceeded the number of posts available,” said Aswani, a junior. “We believe that this level of interest from the general student body denotes an unprecedented desire for involvement in the Student Association.”

The eight vice presidential cabinet positions, which all must be approved by the senate rules committee and the full senate before they become official, went to many familiar faces within the SA.

Tim Little, a junior, will serve as vice president for academic affairs for the second third year in a row.

Freshmen SA Sens. Shawn Dejbaksh (FYNV) and Tabisa Walwema (FYNV) will be VP for student activities and public affairs respectively.

SA Sen. J.P. Simon (SMHS) will serve as VP for graduate student policy.

Sophomore Dan Curran, current VP of student activities, will serve as VP for undergraduate student policy next year.

Current senate parliamentarian Fred Girard, a sophomore, will serve as VP for legislative and judicial affairs.

Freshmen Chas Pressner and Jason Lifton, will serve as VP for financial affairs and community affairs respectively. Pressner is currently the assistant VP for financial affairs.

SA Sen. Nick Polk (FY-NV), next year’s rules chair, said Aswani’s appointments exceeded his expectations.

“They represent such a great cross section of GW,” said Polk, a freshman. “I recognized people I served on the Senate and in the SA with, people that I play basketball with, people that sit next to me in class, generally people from all over GW. I definitely know that the people Vishal appointed will represent a broad range of experiences in different student organizations and other divisions of GW and will bring those experiences to create a very diverse and successful cabinet.”

Polk said he does not envision any of Aswani’s appointments not making it through his committee.

“Having sat through these interviews and (having) met these people, I am confident that they will exceed our expectations, give 110% to GW, and are here because they want to make a change and help others,” Polk said. “Because of this, I am confident that they will pass through.”

The senate rules committee will vote on the approval of Aswani’s cabinet appointments April 10.

Looks like apromising group of individuals. I look forward to seeing what they get accomplished next year…

1 thing though…im pretty sure Tim Little is going on his THIRD year next year as VP. Hope they really all do pass rules without issue, as the chairman has said.

Also, Chas and Jason are not SA newbies… Chas is the current Asst VPFA so it’s only natural he becomes VPFA and Jason is an asst. to one of the current VP’s

GW’s SA only stands to excel from Aswani’s selected choice for next year’s executive cabinet.
Congratualtions to all!
Do it right!

This is beginning to sound a lot like Pravda in the olden Soviet Union.

I heard two people talking about how Vishal is appointing people who helped him get elected, that he was promising positions before applications were even out.

This post has been changed to reflect that Tim Little will be VPAA for the third time, not second.

I heard the same “rumors”… then I saw the press release and realized that wasn’t the case. Chas, Tabisa, Shawn, Jason, and J.P. Simon were not on his staff (half of them were running their own elections and the other half just didn’t want to get involved) and Vishal didn’t give people who were on his staff their first choice- I should know, I was one of them. I’m happy though, he picked people who could best help GW above all else.

“Overheard”, are you the one spreading that same rumor about Tiffany and PB? Or were you someone else who didn’t get a position and are just angry?

People talk, let everyone B.S. around because in the end the only thing that will matter will be what he’ll end up doing this year.

I love this blog!

Mr. B,

I also heard the rumors about Vishal basically assigning positions before the applications were out. I guess you didn’t see:

Tim, Shawn, and Fred rocking Vishal purple t-shirts (speaking of which, what was the deal with his posters, it looked like he was trying to sell me meth). I Have also heard a great deal of rumors about various director positions going to people who were promised the position to do Vishal’s dirty work. I won’t get into details but let’s leave it at this:

I am quite well connected and know a few things about how Vishal’s campaign and staff worked and what incentives they operated under and I have also heard some discontent already with what has been characterized as a sneaky and non-transparent means of operating his new administration.

But then again, we can’t all be ask knowledgeable and well connected as Mr. B, who is probably a freshman who still has not been around long enough to know how ineffective and petty the SA is.

I feel like Lenin and Overheard are both the same people.

I also feel like this “same person” is a vengeful Kevin supporter- or just Marc Abanto, trying to get Vishal.

P.S.

Lenin, if you don’t like it… transfer!

Or at least admit who you are since you are “quite well connected and know a few things about how Vishal’s campaign and staff worked”.

It’s people like you that make me drink… and make me happy we elected Vishal, someone who probably isn’t reading this damn blog.

Hey y’all, just looking over the blog while trying to fall asleep and wanted to give my perspective. I will agree strongly with one thing I read, and that is that the SA can be very petty, after all most of it is playing politics. What I didn’t agree with is all this talk about patronage and such. I sat in on most of the interviews for the cabinet, and I can say with absolute certainty that the people appointed are some of the best possible for the job. Every one of them is dedicated, capable, and wants to give back to GW, even if they didn’t have some title. I can’t prove it to anyone, but I will personally guarantee that we will all be blown away by what the individuals mentioned above will be able to accomplish. If anyone wants to hold me to that promise, just shoot me an email.

TO: THAT GUY

“I feel like Lenin and Overheard are both the same people.

How dare you imply that Marc Abanto would ever post such distasteful posts on this site! I have been enemies with Marc and, later on, best friends with him. There is no person within the SA, and frankly that I know, who is someone with greater character than Marc Abanto. Furthermore, if the person posting this knew anything about GW politics and people in general they would know that Marc and Vishal are friends. Further, that Marc would never let a petty election get in the way of that friendship.

Now, I have been here for a long long time and let me say that this kind of talk on the blog is counterproductive.

Sorry for writing so much…I feel like Bevin (and if you don’t know who and what I am referencing…go home and stop trying to play politics).

That Guy,

Unlike you, fortunately I did not come to GW because of its Student Association. Thus being unhappy with the SA is far from being a valid reason to transfer. I feel bad for people like you who take the SA so seriously that not liking it or being part of it is reason enough to transfer. Plus, does having an opinion that is not like that of other people automatically group you as one of their supporters? I find it quite comical how you automatically assume there is no more than one person out there who dislikes the SA or Vishal and his mannerism. I’m sorry to break it to you but your knight in shining armor isn’t as immaculate as you have been led to believe.

Also, I don’t think we need to use words like admitting who we are, since I don’t believe I an responsible for any crime or illegal act. Maybe “coming forth” would be a more proper query.

Why should I admit who I am when you are just as adamant to reveal who you are?

Tisk tisk, poor grammar and poor logic, now I know what sort of people voted for Vishal, although I won’t hold the drinking against you.

If anyone has questions about transparency in Vishal’s administration, why don’t they just email him and ask him about it?

Ah, the annual inauguration of a new class of tool-bags who think that they’re far more important than they are. Hopefully they’ll get glossy business cards, the matte ones just don’t make them important enough.
