Fall Fest

Program Board has released the following statement:

PB would like to thank all of those who attended Fall Fest today and enjoyed the event. Thousands turned out for a day of amusements, student performances, giveaways and free barbeque in University Yard. Fall Fest 2009 was one of the most highly attended in PB’s history.

PB is extremely disappointed with the actions of a few members of the crowd. After many different objects were thrown directly at Sean Kingston, the concert was temporally suspended and the audience was asked to refrain from engaging in inappropriate and potentially dangerous behavior by Tim Miller, Executive Director of Student Activities Center. Sean Kingston agreed to return to the stage and played continued to play his set. At the end of his set, two additional objects were thrown and struck him. This resulted in Sean Kingston leaving the stage by the direction of his personal security.

PB would like to thank the volunteers and GW administration that worked to make this event possible.

Kingston walks off stage at Fall Fest

10:23 p.m. Fall Fest ended on a sour note this evening when singer Sean Kingston ended his show abruptly after objects were thrown on stage.

Kingston, who was the headliner at Saturday’s concert, left the stage a little more than half hour after he started his set when two glow sticks were thrown on stage. Tim Miller, executive director of the Student Activities Center came on stage to tell the crowd not to throw objects, and Kingston returned about 10 minutes later. But after two more songs, another glow stick was thrown and Kingston left the stage again.

Reached on his cell phone, Miller said Kingston made the decision to leave the stage after approximately 30 glow sticks were thrown on the stage. “It was up to the crowd to decide if the show would go on,” he said. Kingston was scheduled to perform two more songs, he added.

Program Board, who gave out the glow sticks at the event, released a statement after the show that said Kingston was struck by two objects thrown after he had come back on stage.

Program Board Chair Tiffany Meehan said Kingston finished his set, but was scheduled to do a two-song encore that he did not complete. Mike Geremia, the agent who worked with Program Board to book the event, however, said Kingston cut his set by about 15 minutes, not including an encore.

Geremia added the singer was scheduled to do a meet and greet with students from Program Board, but Kingston declined to after the show.

“I don’t know what students would get out of throwing glow sticks on the stage,” Geremia said.

Meehan said Kingston was “very upset.”

“One GW student ruined a show that thousands came to today and that’s unbelievable.”

Meehan declined to discuss Program Board’s financial engagement with Kingston. Asked if the shorter show would effect Kingston’s compensation, Geremia said “It’s not his fault that the show was stopped short and I’ll leave it at that.”

Sean Kingston to headline Fall Fest

Recording artist Sean Kingston will headline this year’s Fall Fest, Program Board has just announced.

Kingston will be the top performer at this year’s event, which will take place in University Yard on Sept. 5. The concert will follow a day of rodeo-themed events such as jousting and a mechanical bull, according to a news release. Program Board also announced the news on its Twitter page.

Past years’ performers have included OK Go, Common. Last year, bands Virginia Coalition and The Canon Logic performed, as did local rap artist Wale.

Interested students can learn more about the event and sign up to volunteer on Program Board’s Web site.

Harvard stops Girl Talk concert

A Girl Talk concert at Harvard Thursday ended prematurely when police stopped the show amid concerns for students’ safety.

The Harvard Crimson reported that the crowd of students was pushing to get near the stage despite repeated requests from concert organizers and administrators to step back. As per Girl Talk’s contract, no barricade was in place between the stage and crowd.

Earlier this year, the University had approached the popular mash-up artist about playing at Fall Fest, but then backed out of contract negotiations in large part because of Girl Talk’s request that no barricade be put in place.

“It is something we aren’t equipped to handle and is something we weren’t willing to take on,” SAC Executive Director Tim Miller said at the time.

Wale to headline Fall Fest

D.C.-based hip-hop artist Wale (pronounced wah-lay) will perform at Fall Fest tomorrow, Program Board announced Friday.

“Wale will add his high energy performance to the already full fay of amusements and music,” Program Board Chair Tiffany Meehan wrote in a news release.

Wale has recorded four mixtapes since 2005, with his fifth, titled Back to the Feature, set to be released at the end of this month. He has collaborated in the past with such artists as the Roots, Shwayze and Lil Wayne. In 2007, Wale was named by Entertainment Weekly as one of eight people to watch in 2008.

Wale will join rock bands Virginia Coalition and The Canon Logic, both of which were announced last week.

Due to potentially inclement weather resulting from Hurricane Hanna, Fall Fest will be held in the Smith Center tomorrow at 3 p.m.
