Guiffre: Let’s be smarter

Columnist Justin Guiffre discusses how we must make an investment in our educational system or else risk widening the intelligence gap.

“Researchers already point out that America stands as one of the only industrialized nations where the older generation is actually more educated than the 25-34 year age bracket. A recent report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education projects that the problem will only get worse.”

It is frightening when you realize that college tuition and fees rose an average of 439 percent from 1982 to 2007. In that same quarter century, median household income rose only 147 percent. This skyrocketing tuition increase has resulted in fewer young people attending college. Consequently, America has become one of the only industrialized nations where the older generation is more educated than the 25- to 34-year-old age group. The federal government needs to significantly increase its higher education budget, specifically providing more financial aid for needy college students. Failure of the government to do so, will most likely result in each of the next several generations being less educated than their previous generation — and that will undoubtedly have a significant negative impact on our great nation!
