Struble: Getting the finance debate right

Cory Struble, President of both GW College Democrats and the D.C. Federation of College Democrats, urges SA candidates to help student organizations with funding issues.

“GW organizations do great things. It’s time these organizations get the money and resources needed to accomplish even greater things. This is just one issue among many – but if the discourse is elevated, meaningful change can be made.”

I could not agree with Cory more. Large organizations like the College Democrats have proven time and time again that they elect knowledgeable leaders that will effectively manage large initial allocations. The problem arises with smaller, or lesser-known organizations, such as those that were born this year to support presidential candidates. While a $5000 check for the College Dems might be commonplace, for a new organization, such is not the case, and to simply write blank checks to most of campus would be a gross mismanagement of our collective funds.

The solution I proposed this year, and look forward to continuing next year is to expand the use of umbrella organizations. Nobody on campus knows the needs of the many niche communities we have, than that community itself. By placing smaller political groups under larger, established orgs like the College Dems as we did this year, that larger up front allocation can be realized.

As a member of several campus groups myself, I understand that beyond mentoring smaller student organizations we need to establish a student org. help desk and formally train members of our student government so they truly understand what it means to run a student org, a criticism you so accurately pointed out. We should make it just a little bit easier for those rising student orgs, by continuing the progress made this year in simplifying the financial process by reducing paperwork and the hoops one must jump through.

It’s our money. It shouldn’t be this hard.
