Staff editorial: Gelman should be functional, not flashy

The Hatchet’s editorial board argues that while improvements to Gelman Library need to become a priority, there needs to be an emphasis on practical student needs over impressive superficial renovations

“The plans for the library, which still need a considerable amount of fundraising, do address some of the pressing student needs, such as opening up the first floor, improving the overall appearance and adding natural light. Still, GW needs to be weary of falling into the common trap of putting flashiness before function.”

Do any administrators read the hatchet? Someone up there should read this editorial. We’re short for money and there putting in plasma TV’s. Stop trying to make it flashy for prospective students and give us what we really need. Quiet space and power outlets.

I do not think the students want a flashy library, they finally want more space to study, outlets to work in, a safe area to study, more lighting, to update it! I am a Senior and I have been going to gelman almost every night of the week and I just have to say its so run-down. What students want is practical, I think you just haven’t been in Gelman long enough to realize it. Wake up!
