Yet again I state my disapproval of the Hatchet’s support of a candidate, inherently biasing its coverage of the news.

  2. Frank says:

so, every national newspaper supporting a candidate biases their coverage too?

  3. Josh says:

Everything’s biased in some way or another.

  4. Don't Tread on Me says:

Every national newspaper has dozens of competitors. Who provides an ability for an alternate opinion of student issues outside of the hatchet as well distributed.

Also, a sidebar question. I am not sure of how the hatchet is funded. Is it from the SA, the school, or just from the advertising money it recieves. This is important because if it from the SA then there is a clear issue for supporting candidates and if the funds are coming from the university itself then the Hatchet would be voicing an opinion on behalf of the school which seems improper on some level. If it is just funded by advertising money then this is not an issue however it does not negate the lack of competition the hatchet has to its opinions.

    Don’t Tread on Me,

To answer your question, The Hatchet is an editorially and financially independent non-profit corporation.

I will also note that, like other newspapers, The Hatchet maintains a separation between news and opinion. No news editors serve on the editorial board, and no endorsement or opinion voiced by the editorial board influences the paper’s news coverage.

  6. Don't Tread on Me says:

First off thank you for allaying my fears on the funding and respectfully withdraw that statement. However, even with separation between the opinion editors and the news writers I still believe that it is improper for the only student paper read on campus to insert itself into the politics of the SA.
