Braslavsky: Protesting Fred Phelps

Freshman Tom Braslavsky, a Hatchet columnist, gives his views on Fred Phelps and the counter-protests he provokes.

“By taking advantage of their hate to fund causes that promote love and positive feelings – helping find a cure for AIDS, preventing hate-based violence and other such endeavors – sensible people can show the Westboro Baptist Church that its delusional hatred will never succeed in our society.”

  1. Don't Tread on Me says:

Is the Westoboro Baptist Church a delusional group? How many delusional people do you know who can plan and execute mid-sized protests throughout the year, nationwide. I believe GW students are being just as hate-filled by mocking this small group of societies beliefs whether through the chants or, as shown in a prior issue, homosexual couples kissing in front of them intentionally to raise their anger. Do I agree with the members of this church, no. Do I consider their actions as evil, no simply misguided. Would I want them to be forced to stop doing what they are doing, no. While I may disagree strongly with their beliefs I will defend to the death their right to say it.
Counter-protests as this article is promoting are not made for a public discourse or to raise discussion, they are simply using free speech in retaliation. While students do have the right to speak out against the beliefs of the members of the Westboro Church, I feel it is wrong to intentionally take actions meant to anger them, such as the mentioned fundraisings.
In conclusion, I the central point I am trying to hammer home here is that protesting the church’s protests in the fashion this article promotes have no place in promoting public discussion or understanding, only to insight the mob mentality and anger.
