Sophomore Andrew Clark, a Hatchet columnist, argues that The Fairness Doctrine would only serve to harm free speech.
“So it looks like the Fairness Doctrine has died out in Congress, at least for now. Anyone at GW who believes in free speech, particularly the staff of The Hatchet, should be pleased to hear that. “

Who exactly is Clark writing to? He says “the Democrats” want to bring back the Fairness Doctrine, as if the entire party supports it. But conveniently he leaves out the fact that the Senate voted in February — by a vote of 87-11 — on an amendment that banned bringing back the Doctrine. Nobody has even introduced legislation since 2005 that proposes reinstating it. Basically, Clark’s entire column is one big straw man.
Pelosi has said she supports the Fairness Doctrine as has other senators. If the leader of the Democrats, the one that was elected by other representative to preside over them, supports something, it is a fair chance to say that there is a majority that share the same view.
Dan R,
Dude, you forgot Andrew Clark’s number 1 rule: Never let the facts get in the way of a column!
Dan R. is completely right. Not once has any tip Democratic leader suggested reinstating it, but that doesn’t stop conservative pundits from railing against the imminent onslaught of liberal talk radio and enforced “fairness.” It’s almost as ridiculous as the North American Union conspiracy.
The Democrats won’t need the Fairness Doctrine if they can move ahead with the idea of “localism” and the community boards they want to appoint to make sure stations represent the community. The Fairness Doctrine is well-known and the mere mention sparks debate. The more stealthy approach of the FCC threatening to not renew a license if the programming does not reflect the “community” is far more worrisome.
Pelosi has said she supports reinstating the Fairness Doctrine. As have multiple members of Congress, and many Senators, who vowed to kill a bill that would outlaw it.
