Wolfe: Fight for transgender equality

Zachary Wolfe, an assistant professor in the University Writing Program, counters some points about transgendered equality that were brought up in a previous Hatchet op-ed.

“I look forward to a broader dialogue that begins with the Faculty Senate joining those who have declared abhorrence of bigotry against transgender students and employees, and continues with ongoing discussions and efforts to live up to that principle.”

The GW community is fortunate to have people advocating for transgendered equality. I’m excited to see how this unfolds with Prof. Wolfe leading the dialogue (great UW professor by the way!).
On another note, I found this point from the previous Hatchet op-ed particularly disturbing:
“Additionally, if the amendment would permit persons with male genitalia to use a women’s restroom, this might permit males dressed and acting like men to use a women’s restroom…” By that logic, let’s ban male toddlers nationwide from entering women’s’ restrooms with their mothers. Cause, if toddlers can, then teenage boys can too- and we can’t have that. Obviously personal demographics— i.e. age or sexual orientation, matter. Arguing against an amendment protecting minority rights because of how someone in the majority could theoretically exploit it (without offering a better solution) is negligent, and a detriment to the community.
