Staff Editorial: Confronting Controversy

The Hatchet’s editorial board argues that controversial speakers are an important part of a well rounded college experience.

A new record may have been set this year for how quickly controversy came to GW’s campus. It’s only two days into the new academic year, and already two different public figures have stirred emotions in Foggy Bottom. Yesterday, the coup-removed President of Honduras, Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales, spoke at the Elliott School. Only hours later, Virginia gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell (R) spoke in the Marvin Center. Regardless of our personal reservations toward both speakers, the Hatchet’s editorial board wholeheartedly supports their appearances on campus.

I can’t believe The Hatchet would publish trash like this. Next thing you know, they’ll be advocating for those protesters’ rights on G Street.

It’s inexcusable for a prestigious University like GW to be entertaining the nonsense from Zelaya and company. If Hitler came to campus, would we expect a similar reception?

I can’t believe no one else agrees with me on this one.

99% of students agree that they should be able to speak. How about the editorial board tackle issues that the student body is actually divided over? Take a stand.

Definetely, having someone like former president Manuel Zelaya speak in such a prestigous university elevates him more to make the rest of the world see him as a martir. We the majority of honduran are so HAPPY he is gone. The rest of the world have to understand what he did before he was ousted. He violated honduran law right and left, he went against congress and the supreme court and stole public funds to support his so called public survey. We are a poor country but we are standing by our constitution with dignity. Some day the rest of the world will understand, that all we want is peace. Come see whats going on here…nothing of what Zelaya is saying is happening here is true!!!
